Frequently asked questions
Which certificate do I need?
Individuals and autónomos generally use an individual certificate. Companies require the appropriate representative certificate for their legal form and the representative’s authority.
Is an NIE required?
Foreign nationals generally need evidence of their NIE together with a passport or identity document.
How is identity verified?
After the online application, identity is usually verified through an authorised office. Remote methods may be available to some applicants.
Can the certificate be obtained remotely?
Some FNMT certificate processes permit video identification or the use of an active DNIe, subject to eligibility and current conditions.
Can it be installed on several devices?
Yes, provided that the certificate permits export with the private key and each device is under your control. A secure backup should be retained.
What if the certificate does not work?
We check its validity, the presence of the private key, browser and operating system compatibility, and the requirements of the relevant online service.
Can I share the certificate file and password?
No. Together, they may allow another person to act in your name and must remain private.
What if the certificate is expiring or has expired?
If it is still valid, we check whether online renewal is available. Once it has expired, a new certificate is usually required.
